Michael Clark Company: come, been and gone

11 May – 12 May | Norwich Theatre Royal

Michael Clark Company | Visit website

Michael Clark Company's latest production evolves from Clark's admiration for the music of rock's holy trinity, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, who worked in close proximity during the 1970s. The production includes Bowie's iconic song 'Heroes'.

Hailed by the Independent on Sunday as 'British dance's true iconoclast', Michael Clark creates work that combines his classical fluency with a twisted contemporary sensibility that embraces embarrassment, doubt, and fear, as well as grace, virtue and control. He is renowned for his legendary collaborations with bands, fashion designers and visual artists including Wire, BodyMap, Leigh Bowery, Trojan and Sarah Lucas.

Review 1

Rock music is good for Michael Clark. His latest work, Come, Been and Gone, shown as part of bite and Dance Umbrella, returns to the music of his teens: Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, David Bowie. Even the programme is designed to look like a 7-inch record sleeve. With this soundtrack, Clark and his company gleam with purpose. It's the best thing he's done in years.

Review 2

It's a lovely, knowing pastiche of styles, like Clark's version of Frederick Ashton's Facade – and there are parts of Come, Been and Gone that inevitably look underdeveloped by contrast. But overall the programme is vintage Clark, especially since his masterpiece Swamp opens the evening.

After 23 years, this work is still shockingly good. Bruce Gilbert's music isn't awfully inspiring, with its relentless, windscreen-wiper washes of sound, yet Clark mines it for extraordinary textures and patterns. The accumulating power of ritual and the evocation of a world both heroic and damaged are hair-raising. Best of all, it is performed by the finest company of dancers Clark has yet possessed.

Review 4

Michael Clark has always been able to marry serious contemporary dance sensibilities to fashionable hard-core rock music, a talent that gives him instant credibility outside the dance world as well as within it. You certainly felt the Clark buzz circulating through the foyer of the Edinburgh Playhouse on the opening night of his new Festival commission. And no wonder. For his latest creation, come, been and gone Clark has chosen music by a trinity of 1970s rock gods: Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and David Bowie.
