Artist, performance maker and writer Tim Etchells infiltrates street corners, shop windows, rooftops and other unexpected places across Norwich city centre with a series signs, spelling out in neon simple phrases, messages and instructions. These signs, which seem to address the viewer directly, create awkward moments of intimacy in a public setting. In each case the viewer becomes implicated in a personal relationship with the sign's imagined author. In some instances, these signs seem to "want" something from us, or ask something of us - often quite forthrightly. At other times they draw us into a story we can't refuse and which, at the same time, we can't quite understand, pulling us into a contradictory and perplexing no-man's land between fiction and reality.
You can find Neon Signs at the following sites:
- 68 Prince of Wales Road
- Red Lion Street, opposite Debenhams
- The Bandstand, Chapelfield Gardens
- The Book Hive, London Street
- Jarrolds, London Street
