Festival audiences four times higher than ever before

This year Norfolk & Norwich Festival attracted almost 300,000 people. This is a significant increase on 2009 when the May Festival audience was just over 62,000.

The increase was in part a result of increased ticket sales for music, dance, theatre, circus and children’s events but had a boost from the extended programme of outdoor performances and eye-catching visual arts installations and exhibitions.

	The Festival in numbers

278,000 estimated audience numbers for NNF10

49,996 text messages sent as part of A Short Message Spectacle (An SMS)

 34,000 audience at paid events

1000 performers taking part in NNF10

 350 NNF10 events

140 volunteers working for NNF this May

 100+ Funders, sponsors and partners

96 haircuts by the children of Norwich’s Catton Grove School

60 unique flags created by schools and community groups

32% rising in value of tickets sold compared with 2009

23 world premieres, UK premieres and exclusives

 16 days in May

 8 Festival commissions

 7 ice cream vans

4th biggest city festival in the UK

With a style that undeniably harks back to the days of classic 50s and early 60s R&B, James Hunter's voice is smooth, brilliantly controlled and unapologetic and possesses the same timeless quality inherent in early innovators such as Sam Cooke, Bobby Bland and Ray Charles. Through his infectious vocal and guitar performances, clever song writing and tight arrangements, Hunter proves that he has learnt from his influences rather than simply imitating them, which ensures that he can whip up a frenzy among hardened gig goers and young hipsters alike.

The creative partnership of the Voice Project Choir, Norwich's renowned open-access choir, and NNF has produced some of the most memorable Festival performances in recent years. This year's Voice Project commission Recording Angel is a three-way collaboration between trumpeter Arve Henriksen, sampler/DJ Jan Bang and Voice Project co-director Jonathan Baker. It draws on influences from medieval Gregorian chant to contemporary found-sounds and ambient polyphony.

Yes, you read it right the Urban Spaceman himself, impresario of the witty song & graduate of The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Monty Python & The Rutles, will be singing us just a few choice songs and bringing his own brand of comic genius to the Spiegel Lates with a little help from the U.K's number 1 street band 'Swervy World'.

Swervy World will close the night with a set once described as “an irrelevant irreverent roller coaster ride into the deepest depths of rock and roll” Loud suits, great music – and an obsessive compulsion to keep dance floors jumping.

Avatar* is an interactive dance solo from award-winning Barcelona dance collective, Erre que Erre. Exploring ways in which a virtual space and a living body interact, the piece uses the human form as a writing tool that etches a narrative of movements and gestures across the stage. This energetic piece allows the audience exclusive access to the dancer's own very private experience as she negotiates her way through a computer generated visual narrative that reacts to every movement she makes.
