24 Mar 2010

Passers-by stop to see RedBall

RedBall: Norwich, the visual arts installation already capturimng the imagination of people all over the city, is one step closer today as sites for the giant RedBall are revealed by Norfolk & Norwich Festival.  Having made headlines across the globe - from Barcelona to Chicago - artist Kurt Perschke’s RedBall bounces into town to squish into the most unlikely of spaces across Norwich.

Starting at the Railway Station on Friday 7 May, the RedBall’s playful trek across the city centre will investigate the city’s architectural heritage and character and will use Norwich as an enormous playground.

Sites announced today are:

  • Friday 7 May - Railway Station
  • Saturday 8 May - Friendship Bridge (subject to confirmation)
  • Sunday 9 May - York Alley
  • Wednesday 12 May - All Saints Green
  • Thursday 13 May - Pull's Ferry
  • Friday 14 May - St Andrew's Lych Gate
  • Saturday 15 May - Fire Station
  • Sunday 16 May - Knowlden Titlow
  • Tuesday 18 May - St. Peter Mancroft
  • Wednesday 19 May - Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts
  • Thursday 20 May - Norwich Castle (11am - 3pm)
  • Friday 21 May - St Gregory's Alley
  • Saturday 22 May - Cathedral: Erpingham Gate

Artist Kurt Perschke said:  “Norwich's tight walkways present some really unique opportunities; we definitely have a few surprises in store."

Norfolk & Norwich Festival Artistic Director, Jonathan Holloway said:  “RedBall: Norwich defies normal rules of engagement.  4.5 metre red spheres don’t usually squish into doorways or perch beneath mediaeval arches.  Internationally-acclaimed visual arts installations don’t often make you chuckle or invite you to bounce against them.  Well this one does.

“Playing between the built environment and the world of plastic arts and intervention, RedBall: Norwich will transform the way we see this vibrant city over 16 days this May and for years to come.”
